IUP “Into the Streets”
Students Making a Difference for the Elderly and DisabledOn April 24th, Saturday, IUP students have volunteered mow yards, rake, weed, paint, wash windows and help where needed at care receivers’ homes in Indiana County. “Into the Streets” is a project set up by the Service Learning Department at the Indiana University of PA. It is a chance for IUP students to become involved in the community by helping nonprofit agencies and their clients. Into the Streets is not unique to IUP. It is a national effort that encourages university members to participate and become active in their local communities. For some, the program provides a first-time experience, yet for others it is just one way that both Indiana and IUP strive to bridge the gap between the classroom and the local community. Held in both the fall and spring semesters, Into the Streets allows individual students, groups of students, and members of student organizations to become involved in a project.
